Before I ever tried refinishing furniture, this project was on the top of my list. Since TVs have moved from these once lovely cabinets to large wall mounts/art, we have to repurpose these. What better way than an inviting coffee station. That is the NW girl in me - coffee!

Selecting an armoire
First - know that they are heavy! But don't worry. You will most likely be stripping away a lot of the wood. Most are a mix of real wood and other materials.
Size: no deeper than 22" and no wider than 40" (my rule of thumb)

Design
Have a design in mind but be open to allowing the piece to help you form your decision.
A simple an open cabinet space is a great place to start. I removed the doors and some shelving. On this one, I also removed the back and added a cedar backing (sealed with white wax).

Paint
Chalk paint all the way. Why? Because unless the surface is super glossy, no sanding is required. While I have tried a number of excellent chalk paint, I prefer to make my own.
Directions to make your own chalk paint:

Select a flat latex paint (I prefer that it also includes primer)
Purchase a plastic container to mix an store your chalk paint.
Add calcium carbonite powder. See the link on the left for the kind I use.

Finish
This is key. There are a lot of wood and finishes that change the color of your paint....which makes you want to cry after you thought you had just put on the finishing touch. My secret? Clear wax seal it first then add a more durable and cleaning friendly seal. The Behr wax at the Home Depot is my favorite. It is very easy to work with. After that, I seal it with flat or matte polycrylic (link on left).
